DIY Food Project: Fun Halloween Rice Krispies Treats!

Willow and I received a box in the mail from Kellogg’s yesterday that had a VERY FUN kit inside! The kit was to create our own Halloween inspired Rice Krispies treats! Inside was a box of Kellogg’s Rice Krispies, two cutters (one in the shape of a pumpkin and one in the shape of a bat), Wilton’s gel icing in orange and black, candy and Bubble Tape bubble gum in orange and black as well. Translation? A whole lot of fun inside of one box!

I haven’t made Rice Krispie treats in FOREVER so I was actually pretty excited to try my hand at them again. For some reason, it seemed so much more difficult when I was younger.

What You Need:

  • 5 cups of Rice Krispies cereal
  • 1 bag of marshmallows (pictured here – Fireside marshmallows)
  • 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup of margarine or butter

How You Make Them:

  1. Melt butter/margarine in a large saucepan on low heat
  2. Add marshmallows and stir until they are fully melted
  3. Add your vanilla extract
  4. Stir in your Rice Krispies cereal
  5. Transfer into a lightly greased container / baking dish OR
  6. Put wax paper over a pizza pan, put the Rice Krispies on top, line with another sheet of wax paper and push down until flat
  7. Leave to harden a bit before decorating (but not too hard!)

We had SO MUCH FUN making these…  First, we melted our butter and marshmallows and I took this opportunity to let Willow help and teach her about stove safety and about the stove being hot.  I also let her stir – again, making sure all little fingers were away from anything hot.

Then, I tried to make a pumpkin ball too early and ended up with a gooey mess all over my hands.  Note to anyone trying this out… DO NOT attempt to make a ball while the mixture is still warm… GOOEY GOOEY GOOEY!

However, I had a solution… Willow and I ate it off of my hands!  She kept calling it, “Sticky” and I kept sticking it to her.  I’m not going to lie, she loved it and I did too!  We were feasting on my hands and she even attempted to lick them clean (I stopped her and opted for soap and water instead!)

We decided that instead of just attempting pumpkin balls, we would lay the treats out on a pizza pan (on top of wax paper) so that we had something to use the cookie cutters on!  It worked PERFECTLY!

Once we got down to business, we made pumpkins, bats and round ball pumpkins using the cutters and our decorating items.  You can see here that daddy even got in on the action too!  He loved using the Wilton’s gel icing to add eyes and bat wings to the bats.

Our finished products looked SO CUTE!  We had two pumpkin balls, two flat pumpkins, two pumpkins with faces and four bats.  A super yummy treat and something to get us into the Halloween spirit.

Thank you SO much to Kellogg’s for giving us the opportunity to create a festive spirit in our house through SUPER YUMMY treats!

Those are adorable!! I love the bats! And that is so cute that Willow was licking off the rice krispies. I might make these with Addy, so she can bring them in for her classmates.
